What happens
Richard Steele, a bookseller and amateur psychologist, sets out to commit a murder with no connection to any victim, testing a theory he argued with his friend Elliot about. He buys gloves and a knife, then strikes a stranger in a crowd. Afterward he becomes haunted by the victim's face and voice, and by the sense that he must confront what he has done. Suspense presents this 1954 episode of June 15, with Joseph Kearns in the lead role as Mr. Steele. Written by Sylvia Richards, it is told through Steele's private journal, which a hospital attendant later reads.
New York City in the summer heat of July and August, including a bookshop, a hardware store, a library, a drugstore and the subway, followed by a hospital.
Characters: Richard Steele, Elliot, Dr. West, Ms. Adams, Ms. Rosenberg
Listen for: The journal entries that narrate Steele's experiment, the recurring rhythmic sound in his head, and the repeated encounters with the man he believes he killed.
Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
