What happens

Valerie, a young girl, is upset when her father seems to have forgotten her birthday, and she feels pushed aside since her stepmother Paula came to live with them. Her father George and Paula give her a doll named Henny, which has a winding key and a beating heart mechanism. Valerie grows strangely attached to the doll, insists she must keep it wound up forever, and takes it to a secret hiding place in the garden. Her distress deepens as she wanders from the house with the doll, and her behavior worries those around her.

A family home with a garden and a secret hideaway at the end of it, with a nearby fishing area and a town street in later scenes.

Characters: Valerie, George, Paula, Chris, Henny

Listen for: The ticking and heartbeat sound of the winding doll, and the father's and Paula's concerned conversations about Valerie's behavior.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
