What happens

Matt Miller, a gambler in the 1920s, fixes a prize fight with money he borrowed, and the win launches his rise into illegal gambling and lending. Friends and business partners depend on him, while his lawyer Chris and his partner Lou remain close to his affairs. His fortune grows through casinos and loans, but his soft spot for borrowers and his reckless dealings begin to unravel his position. Matt's fiancée Ellen pleads with him to leave the city, and the story moves through raids, lost records, and threats from creditors. This is the Suspense radio drama, first broadcast on December 17, 1951, starring John Hodyak as Matt, and the account stops before its final outcome.

A large American city in the 1920s, with gambling casinos, card games, and a hospital several blocks away.

Characters: Matt Miller, Frank, Charlie, Chris, Lou, Ellen, Gus

Listen for: Matt's first big win on the prize fight, and his conversation with Ellen about leaving the city.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
