What happens

Suspense presents The Beast Must Die, a 1944 episode starring Herbert Marshall as Felix Lane, a writer whose young son was killed by a hit-and-run driver. Lane tracks down the driver, George Rattery, and sets out to kill him, recording his plans in a diary. He befriends the Rattery household, where tensions among George, his wife Lena, and their son Phil are already strained. Lane's diary and his mounting obsession drive the early story, as he circles George and begins to plot a drowning. The original air date was July 13, 1944.

England, a village and the Rattery house, with a nearby inn and a harbor.

Characters: Felix Lane, George Rattery, Lena, Phil, Mrs. Rattery, Inspector Blunt

Listen for: Lane's diary entries and the tense dinner-table conversation about killing.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
