What happens

Anna McCauley, a reclusive woman who has lived alone since her father's death nearly four years ago, grows frightened during a town-wide panic over the lipstick killer, who has been murdering young women and marking them with an orange lipstick cross. She phones her former best friend Helen and asks her to come stay the night, claiming a prowler has been trying her doors. Helen agrees, and the two women spend the evening together in the old house, reviving a long-buried rivalry between them. This episode of Suspense, starring Ida Lupino, is a radio drama adapted from a story by Ray Bradbury.

A small town on a warm summer evening and night, in and around a large old house and the nearby railroad tracks and woods.

Characters: Anna McCauley, Helen, Charles, Ted Barton, Miss Welsh

Listen for: The tense late-night walk from the house toward the railroad tracks, and the conversation between Anna and Helen about their past rivalry.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
