What happens
Frederick Carlson, a visitor staying in a New York apartment, becomes uneasy about a neighbour, Mrs. Pondeker, whose loud, strained singing disturbs the building at night. He meets her in the lobby and is drawn into her apartment, which is filled with expensive jewelry. Soon Mrs. Pondeker's small dog disappears, Carlson's car is found stained with brown matter and white fur, and a heavy-set detective with a soft voice begins questioning him. Carlson must work out how he has come to be under suspicion. This episode of Suspense, a radio thriller first broadcast on November 15, 1945, stars Zachary Scott.
An apartment building in New York City, its lobby, garage, and neighbouring balconies, in the summer.
Characters: Frederick Carlson, Mrs. Pondeker, Morley, Joe, Petey
Listen for: The shrill, desperate singing of Mrs. Pondeker, and the detective's soft, probing questions to Carlson.
Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
