What happens

Charlie Adams, a construction contractor, is married to Clara, a wealthy older woman whose money set him up in business. Their marriage is strained, and one evening a quarrel in the kitchen turns deadly. Afterward Charlie takes the car out on the parkway, where a police officer stops him and watches as he struggles to close the car's trunk. The episode is set around the Blackstone Overpass, a bridge being built under the supervision of Charlie's partner John Moran. Charlie then sets about explaining his wife's absence to friends and to the police, who begin to suspect him.

A suburban house and the Blackstone Overpass construction site in an American city, 1960s.

Characters: Charlie Adams, Clara Adams, John Moran, Lieutenant Watson, Jerry, Dan

Listen for: Charlie's calm, self-satisfied narration as he describes his wife's absence and his growing confidence that no one will discover what happened.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
