What happens

On Mother's Day, Walter Bates arrives in a shabby tenement apartment to visit his mother, Mrs. Bates, and quickly asks her for money he says he must have by midnight to cover a debt. Their tense exchange leads to talk of a life insurance policy held by Mr. Chalmers, a gentle older boarder who lives in the back bedroom. Walter and his mother soon begin to discuss the policy and the boarder's future. Suspense is the radio drama series, and this episode was broadcast on May 8, 1948, starring Faye Bainter as Mrs. Bates, Tony Barrett as Walter and Norman Field as Mr. Chalmers.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
