What happens
Beckham, a shipping agent in an English port, plans to prove that the superstition against sailing on a Friday is nonsense. When insurance broker Edward Etherington refuses to cover the ship Laurenta because its sailing date is a Friday, Beckham turns to other brokers, all of whom decline for the same reason. Beckham then sells his business to his partner Philip and commissions a new ship, to be built entirely on Fridays, with a captain chosen for his reputation. The transcript ends with the ship's launch, and this guide does not reveal what happens after it sails. The episode is from the CBS radio series Suspense, first aired on February 4, 1962, and is dramatized from Jonathan Bunday's script with Ivor Francis in the lead role.
An English port town and London's insurance exchange, followed by a shipyard where a new ship is built.
Characters: Beckham, Philip, Edward Etherington, Archcroft, Malcolm MacBaskin, Captain Friday
Listen for: Beckham's insistence that the Friday curse is mere superstition, and the insurance brokers' refusal to cover a Friday sailing.
Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
