What happens
Elwood Parsons, a young man living above a store with his mother and sister in a small town, is unsettled by his restlessness and his bitterness toward his stepfather. When a prominent citizen is found strangled, the townspeople grow suspicious of one another, and a vigilante committee forms to hunt for the killer. Elwood visits his teacher, Miss Wilson, and a recluse named Mr. Krantz, whose dog Bismarck is a local concern. The episode is part of the Suspense radio series and aired on March 6, 1947; it stars Eddie Bracken.
A small town where everyone knows everyone else, with a rickety frame building above a store, a high school, a gas station, and a shack on a ridge above the railroad tracks.
Characters: Elwood Parsons, Miss Wilson, Winnie Hoss, Mr. Krantz, Mr. Granby, Mom, Sis, Dick
Listen for: Elwood's shifting, increasingly strange remarks in his conversations with Miss Wilson and Mr. Krantz, and the townspeople's talk about the murders and the vigilante committee.
Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
