What happens
Laurie Ryder, a devoted widow, has raised her son Larry alone since his father died when he was a boy. When Larry announces that he plans to marry Roberta, a young woman from his office, Mrs. Ryder reacts with alarm and resentment, and she moves to undermine the relationship. Larry is caught between his mother's demands and his own feelings for Roberta. This is the first part of the drama from the CBS series Suspense, broadcast on January 4, 1959, starring Agnes Moorehead.
A house and neighborhood in an American city in the late 1950s, including the Ryder home and a local butcher shop.
Characters: Laurie Ryder, Larry Ryder, Roberta, Mr. Stern
Listen for: Mrs. Ryder's increasingly controlling and manipulative conversations with her son and his fiancée.
Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
