What happens
Opera baritone Nicolo Mazzini confesses to a murder over the telephone to a police lieutenant, minutes before he is due to sing in Don Giovanni. The story goes back to the general manager, Felix Levine, who has discovered Nicolo's affair with Leola Dantes and confronts him with enormous debts on the company's guarantee. A heated argument in the empty opera house ends with Nicolo striking Felix with a stage work light. Nicolo then notices a witness with flaming red hair sitting in the auditorium, and his troubles multiply from there. The episode is part of the Suspense series, starring Ezio Pinza, and aired on January 25, 1951.
A deserted opera house and nearby apartments, in an unnamed city.
Characters: Nicolo Mazzini, Felix Levine, Leola Dantes, Irene, Lieutenant Morgan
Listen for: The telephone calls between Nicolo and an unidentified caller who knows about the killing.
Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
