What happens
Chuck Riggs is taken by his uncle Matt to a secret meeting of the Clan of the Fiery Cross, a hooded society in the hills above Metropolis. There Chuck is coached to testify that teammate Tommy Lee deliberately struck him with a pitch after a baseball practice. Matt Riggs presents the incident as an attack on all true Americans, and the hooded men roar their approval. Afterward, Tommy Lee tells team manager Jimmy Olsen that he is quitting after a burning cross was planted on his family's lawn. Jimmy hurries to Clark Kent at the Daily Planet, who learns that Tommy's father has just been appointed city bacteriologist. The two set out to speak with Tommy and his family.
