What happens

Tom Barnes lives with his ailing mother in a small house on a riverbank outside the city, where the river is slowly eroding the cliff beneath them. His mother is waiting for her elder son Harry, who has been in the penitentiary for ten years for murder and whom she believes is coming home. When Harry and his companion Jake escape from prison after killing a guard, they arrive at the house and Tom is forced to let them in. The story is told as part of The Strange Doctor Weird, the radio series, and this episode's original air date was 1944-11-28.

A small house on the bank of a river just outside the city, on a foggy night.

Characters: Tom Barnes, Mrs. Barnes, Harry Barnes, Jake Padgett, Doctor, Sheriff Goodwright

Listen for: Mrs. Barnes insisting on waiting for her son Harry, and the sheriff's call warning that the escaped prisoners may be heading to the house.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
