What happens

Ken and Helen Bartlett, a lawyer and his wife, have a marriage strained by Helen's habit of lying. Ken has few clients, and when a dubious case arrives through Helen's relatives, Ken turns it down and then takes a secretarial job Helen had arranged behind his back. The episode is part of the Screen Guild Theater series, first broadcast on April 13, 1941, and stars Carol Lombard and Fred MacMurray. Helen's lies keep multiplying, and the first act sets up the couple's marital quarrels and Helen's growing trouble.

A residential household in an American city, with Ken's law office, a secretarial job at Mr. Crayler's office, and later a courtroom.

Characters: Ken Bartlett, Helen Bartlett, Mr. Crayler, Mr. McDougall, Detective Darcy, Mr. Maskler

Listen for: Helen's inventive lies and Ken's exasperation as her stories pile up, especially her claims about the missing baby and her job with Mr. Crayler.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
