What happens

Penny Baxter and his wife Ory live on a hard-scrabble farm in the Florida backwoods with their son Jody. Jody's wish for a pet leads him to adopt an orphaned fawn he names Flag, a bond that grows as the boy and the deer grow up together. The family struggles through bad weather, ruined crops and Penny's injury. The episode is a Screen Guild Theater broadcast of January 6, 1947, dramatizing Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings' novel The Yearling, with Gregory Peck as Penny, Jane Wyman as Ory and Claude Jarman Jr. as Jody. The transcript covers the story up to the family's trouble with the deer.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
