What happens

Regina Giddens, a scheming Southern woman, works to secure funds from her ailing husband Horace for a cotton mill venture with her brothers Ben and Oscar Hubbard and investor William Marshall. Her daughter Alexandra and her brother Leo are drawn into the family's financial dealings, and tensions rise as Horace returns home from Baltimore and refuses to hand over his share. Based on the 1939 play by Lillian Hellman, this Lady Esther Screen Guild Theater broadcast of August 6, 1945 presents the story with its original cast, including Betty Davis, Otto Kruger, Theresa Wright and Charles Dingle, performing the drama before a live audience.

A Southern town in June 1900, at the Hubbard family's home and the nearby bank.

Characters: Regina Giddens, Ben Hubbard, Oscar Hubbard, Horace Giddens, Alexandra Giddens, Leo Hubbard, Birdie Hubbard, William Marshall

Listen for: Regina's sharp exchanges with her brothers over the cotton mill money, and Horace's confrontation with Regina in his room.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
