What happens

Two escaped convicts, Tony Barlow and Blackie Knight, flee a snowstorm in Kansas and take refuge at the farm of Jane Baker, whose grandfather has recently died. Tony is a self-styled optimist who believes Providence watches over him, while Blackie is the pessimist of the pair. The Screen Guild Theater presents this 1939 drama, written by Charles Tazwell and directed by Victor Fleming, with James Cagney, Priscilla Lane, Andy Devine, Donald Meek and Adrian Ames in the leading roles. Jane's late grandfather's will, kept in a long-locked safe, becomes a matter of dispute among the family.

A farm near a Kansas town during a blizzard, and the area around Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Characters: Tony Barlow, Blackie Knight, Jane Baker, Lawyer Harvey, Harriet, Ralph, Carl

Listen for: The question of Daniel Baker's will and the contents of the safe, and how the two escaped men come to be involved in the family's affairs.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
