What happens

In Pine Ridge, Abner Peabody experiments with chemistry in the feed room of the Jotham Down store while his friend Lum Edwards looks on. When Abner's latest concoction turns out to be a sweet gum candy that people have been using for other purposes, Lum takes him to Washington with a claim that he has invented synthetic rubber. The two country men find that getting an audience with the government's Mr. Marshall, head of Civilian Aid in the War Effort, is harder than they expected. This is a Lady Esther Screen Guild Theater broadcast of So This Is Washington, first aired on March 12, 1945, with Lum and Abner played by Lum and Abner and Jimmy Gleason as Mr. Marshall.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
