What happens

Norma Shearer, Basil Rathbone and Lewis Hayward star in this Screen Guild Theater production of Smilin' Through, broadcast December 17, 1939. In England, an elderly John Carteret sits alone in his moonlit garden, calling for his lost love Moonyeen. His niece Kathleen learns that decades earlier, on the night of her wedding to Moonyeen, a violent confrontation involving Jeremy Wayne took place, and Carteret has since blamed the Wayne family. Kathleen falls in love with Kenneth Wayne, Jeremy's son, and the two face her uncle's bitter opposition as Kenneth prepares to leave for the war.

England, a moonlit summer night in 1914, and later in the garden of John Carteret's house during the years after the First World War

Characters: John Carteret, Kathleen Clare, Kenneth Wayne, Moonyeen, Jeremy Wayne, Owen

Listen for: The garden scene where Carteret calls for Moonyeen, and the revelation of what happened at the wedding fifty years earlier

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
