What happens

Clerk Martin and shop assistant Clara work in a Budapest leather goods shop run by Mr. Matuschek. Their constant bickering hides a secret: Martin has been secretly writing letters to an anonymous pen pal and has arranged to meet her at a cafe. Margaret Sullivan, James Stewart and Frank Morgan star in this Screen Guild Theater broadcast of The Shop Around the Corner, first aired on 1940-09-29. Martin and his friend Pirovitch watch from outside the cafe window, where Martin spots a woman waiting with a book and a carnation, but he is unsure whether she is the right person. Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
