What happens

A young woman, working as a paid companion in Monte Carlo, meets the wealthy widower Maxim de Winter and soon marries him. At his grand estate, Manderley, she feels overshadowed by the memory of his first wife, Rebecca, and by the watchful housekeeper, Mrs. Danvers. Her attempts to win her husband's affection lead to a painful confrontation. This radio version of the novel and film Rebecca is part of the Screen Guild Theater series, aired on May 31, 1943, starring Joan Fontaine, Brian Aherne and Agnes Moorehead.

Listen for: Mrs. Danvers's pointed remarks about Rebecca and the way the second Mrs. de Winter gradually feels unwelcome in her own home

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
