What happens

Dr. Jane Everest, a psychiatrist at a mental hospital, finds her routine disrupted when Dr. Charles Monet becomes the new superintendent and opposes women working in her field. Dr. Alex McGregor is her colleague, and his wife Sally is her close friend. Jane grows increasingly concerned about the staff tensions and the troubled people in their care, including Monet himself. This Screen Guild Theater broadcast of September 10, 1945 adapts the Paramount film Private Worlds, with Claudette Colbert and Herbert Marshall starring.

A mental hospital, with its wards, staff quarters and the surrounding grounds, in an unspecified year in the 1940s.

Characters: Dr. Jane Everest, Dr. Charles Monet, Dr. Alex McGregor, Sally McGregor, Claire Monet, Carrie Flint, Jerry Stone, Carson

Listen for: Pay attention to Dr. Monet's first meeting with Jane, where he states his view that women have no place in psychiatry, and to the staff dinner party where his sister Claire begins working on Alex.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
