What happens
Sally Morgan and the hypochondriac Henry Williams are stranded on a lonely Arizona mountain road after their car runs out of gas. Sally has run off with Henry while engaged to the local sheriff, Bob Wells. At dawn they flag down a car, and a holdup follows. Henry and Sally then take refuge at a ranch, where Sally offers to cook for the owner, Jerome K. Underwood, who is due back. The Screen Guild Theater broadcast presented this 1944 play by Owen Davis, starring Mary Esther, Edward Everett Horton and Edgar Kennedy, with the lead actors named as in the broadcast. The first act and part of the second are covered here.
A lonely mountain road in Arizona, and later a ranch nearby.
Characters: Sally Morgan, Henry Williams, Jerome K. Underwood, Bob Wells, Chester, Mr. Knab
Listen for: Henry's constant complaints about his nerves and his many pills and powders, and Sally's clever handling of the sheriff.
Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
