What happens

Doctor David Arkley receives a letter from his fiancée, Ellen Benson, who has waited thirteen years for their wedding. Her letter recalls how they met at Tony's, how their early romance grew through his studies, and how repeated postponements, the Depression, and a rival named Barry wore away their plans. Madeleine Carroll plays Ellen, Gene Raymond plays David, and George Murphy plays Barry. This Screen Guild Theater presentation was broadcast on December 28, 1941, and the story is told through Ellen's letter as David reads it.

San Francisco, from a college campus and Tony's restaurant through the years of the Depression and a long engagement.

Characters: David Arkley, Ellen Benson, Barry O'Neill, Willa Bannell, Charlie, Dr. Grenoble

Listen for: Ellen's letter, read by David, which reveals the story's emotional turns across thirteen years.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
