What happens

Jane Eyre, a plain and penniless orphan, takes a post as governess at Thornfield Hall, where she is employed to teach a young ward. She meets the brooding master of the house, Edward Rochester, and the two are drawn together despite his moods and secrets. Strange noises and a fire in the night unsettle the household. Jane and Rochester plan to marry, but the ceremony is interrupted by a shocking revelation about his past. This Screen Guild Theater adaptation of Charlotte Bronte's novel was broadcast on March 2, 1941, starring Betty Davis as Jane and Brian Aherne as Rochester.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
