What happens
Martin Arrowsmith, a young medical student, is drawn to research under Dr. Gottlieb, a respected bacteriologist who urges him first to earn his medical degree. Martin later marries Leora Tozier, a nurse, and the two settle in a small South Dakota town where he practises medicine. Dr. Gottlieb's offer of a laboratory post is tempting, and Martin must weigh the ordinary life he has chosen against his ambition to make real scientific discoveries. This episode of the Screen Guild Theater, broadcast on September 16, 1946, is hosted by Lady Esther and stars Gregory Peck as Martin, Barbara Britton as Leora and Jean Hersholt as Dr. Gottlieb, adapting Sinclair Lewis's novel.
A medical school and bacteriology laboratory, a small South Dakota town, the McGurk Institute in New York, and a plague-stricken island in the West Indies.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
