What happens

Alice Adams, a young woman from a modest household, attends a party and meets Arthur Russell, a man who seems to be courting her friend Mildred Palmer. Alice is embarrassed by her family's humble circumstances and her brother Walter's behavior. Arthur is drawn to her, and the two begin seeing each other over the summer. Alice keeps up a pretense about her family's wealth and situation, and the deceptions pile up as she hopes to impress him. Her father's glue factory and the family's money troubles press on her as she tries to hide the truth. The episode is adapted from Booth Tarkington's novel and features Diana Durbin as Alice, Alan Marshall as Arthur, and Lucille Gleason as Mrs. Adams.

A town in the United States, around the 1940s, including a dance party, an Adams family home on Maple Street, and a summer of courtship.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
