What happens

Jerry Burton, a war pilot on a short leave in New York, meets photographer Jean Mannion at the Colonial Club and is immediately drawn to her. Jean works for her boss Phil Herriman at the magazine Eiffel, and their professional disagreement leads her to resist Jerry's attention. Jerry pursues her with a mix of charm and playfulness, and their connection grows across a few days in the city. Fred Astaire stars in this Screen Director's Playhouse adaptation of the film The Sky's the Limit, broadcast on NBC on April 24, 1949. The story follows Jerry's brief romance and the conflict it creates with Jean and Phil.

New York City, during the closing years of World War II, including the Colonial Club, the Eiffel magazine offices, and a city street.

Characters: Jerry Burton, Jean Mannion, Phil Herriman, Reg, Gene

Listen for: Jerry's introduction to Jean at the Colonial Club, and the gin rummy game with Phil Herriman.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
