What happens

In 17th-century Holland, the exiled Charles II of England, fleeing Cromwell's men, takes the name Charles Stewart and works as a hired hand on the farm and inn of Katie, a widow who owes money to her cousin Jan. Charles and Katie grow close during his weeks there, while his loyal advisers press him to return to England and claim the throne. Douglas Fairbanks Jr. stars and Max Opels directs this Screen Director's Playhouse presentation of The Exile, which aired on January 23, 1949.

Holland, mid-17th century, a canal, a farm and inn, following the exile of Charles II from England

Characters: Charles II, Katie, Jan, Hyde, Colonel Ingram, General Monk

Listen for: The conversation between Charles and Katie on the farm, and the arrival of Hyde with news from England

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
