What happens

Professor Henry Barnes, a retired philosophy professor, has decided to end his life and is making arrangements to do so. Peggy and Jason Taylor, a young married student couple expecting a baby, are struggling to find housing near the university. Barnes takes them in to his attic, and his life begins to change as he becomes involved with them and with the student wives on campus. The episode is part of the Screen Directors Playhouse series, first broadcast on September 2, 1949, and adapts the film Apartment for Peggy, with Jean Crane in the title role.

A university campus and a town near it, in the late 1940s, with an attic apartment in Professor Barnes's house.

Characters: Henry Barnes, Peggy Taylor, Jason Taylor, Edward Bell, Dr. Conway

Listen for: Listen for the conversation between Professor Barnes and Peggy about suicide and whether a life can still be useful.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
