What happens
Ranger Bill inspects the riverboats that carry tourists from Nadi Pine up to Mirror Lake. Andy Coogan, an old riverman, wants his license renewed, but Bill Jefferson refuses until Coogan's boat is repaired, citing serious safety hazards in the stacks, boiler and wheelhouse. Coogan accuses Bill and his rival, Jim Gunderson, of scheming to drive him out of business. Friends and town officials press Bill to relent, and a meeting at Ranger headquarters turns into a heated debate over responsibility for passenger safety. Bill insists on proper repairs, and Coogan's next move sets the stakes for the river's safety.
