What happens

Ranger Bill and his partner Stumpy investigate a series of fires on the ridges above their town, where carcasses of livestock have been burned. A stranger named Noah Jefferson, who has attended church but left before speaking to anyone, is seen performing an Old Testament style sacrifice. The rangers and a visiting private eye named Fenton try to make sense of the strange events. The story is told through the rangers' efforts to understand what is happening on the mountain and why a man would be performing these rituals in the wilderness.

A forest town near mountain ridges such as Razorback Ridge and Eagle's Roost, in the vicinity of a church and a ranger station.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
