What happens
Timor, a small island in the Pacific divided between the Dutch and the Portuguese, is the setting as Talbot, an Australian trader, travels into its mountainous interior to buy coffee with his associate Van Buskirk and their guide Olic. Their deal is soon disrupted when a Timorese man named Singy and his companions steal part of the coffee, and the traders confront the local justice that follows. As tensions rise between Japan and the Allied powers, Japanese airline activity and diplomatic moves draw the island closer to war. The Pacific Story is the series heard here, and this episode was first broadcast on September 29, 1946.
Timor, in the Pacific, including the ports of Koopang and Dilly and the limestone mountains of the interior, during the years leading up to and including the early Second World War.
Characters: Talbot, Van Buskirk, Olic, Singy, Mr. Onomoto
Listen for: The episode is largely a narrated story; listen for the sound of the Japanese landing barges and the bombardment of Dilly in the later part of the program.
Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
