What happens
Artist Mr. Wellby arrives on Bali, hoping to rest and paint far from the world he knew. Local guide Molly and his wife Popo introduce him to the island's rituals, customs and celebrations, and to a way of life where emotions are carefully controlled. Wellby grows close to the couple and repeatedly asks them to join him in America, where Molly could find fame as a performer. As war spreads across the Pacific, Wellby must leave the villa and later returns to find the island changed by Japanese occupation. The episode is part of The Pacific Story, first broadcast on September 8, 1946, a United Nations series of the National Broadcasting Company.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
