What happens
Newton, an American visiting Manchuria, is shown the South Manchuria Railway, which the Japanese have built and expanded into a network controlling mines, industries, hotels and ports. Guided by Mr. Caronian and Dr. Wu, he sees how the railway shapes the region's economy and power. Yusuka Matsuoka, the railway's director, defends Japan's interests in Manchuria. Dr. Wu reports the Japanese attack on the city and the wider seizure of Manchuria, and the story follows the dispute that reaches the League of Nations and the fighting that spreads into Shanghai. The episode aired on September 10, 1944, as part of the Pacific Story series on the National Broadcasting Company.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
