What happens
Hibbert, an American observer of world affairs, grows alarmed that Japan is secretly fortifying the Caroline Islands, despite its League of Nations mandate forbidding it. Convinced the islands threaten American holdings across the Pacific, he recruits the narrator to visit them. Their trip is shadowed by Japanese guides who steer them away from key sites, and their suspicions deepen. Hibbert then arranges a risky flight over the Carolines to photograph the lagoons and passages. The episode is part of The Pacific Story, first broadcast on February 6, 1944.

Characters: Hibbert, The narrator
Listen for: The description of the lagoons and passages, the Japanese guides steering the visitors away from certain sites, and the tense flight over the islands when enemy planes give chase.
Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
