What happens

In October 1945, General Chen Yi and his staff arrive at Taipei Airport to take over the government of Formosa from the Japanese in the name of the Republic of China. Among the crowds, an old man recalls the Japanese takeover fifty years earlier and the resistance his people offered. The narration traces Formosa's history under Japanese rule, from the forced adoption of Japanese names and clothing to the island's transformation into a military base and sugar producer. It also describes the underground sabotage against the occupiers and the lingering question of how Formosans regard their Chinese heritage. The episode is part of The Pacific Story, an NBC documentary series that aired on November 3, 1946.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
