What happens
The Pacific Story examines Macao, a small Portuguese-held territory on the south China coast, in its episode Decision Pending, first broadcast on 1946-12-29. The program traces the colony's history from its early Portuguese settlement, through disputes with Chinese authorities over leases, trade and customs, to the wartime Japanese occupation. It describes the gambling houses, opium trade, fishing and firecracker industries that shaped daily life in the city. The narrator also notes the territory's changing fortunes as Hong Kong drew away its trade, and the postwar calls in China for Macao to be returned.
Macao, a small Portuguese territory on the south China coast, from the 16th century to the years after the Second World War.
Listen for: Listen for the narrator's account of how Portuguese control of Macao developed and how Chinese authorities responded to it over the centuries.
Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
