What happens

Phileas Fogg, a precise English gentleman, wagers 20,000 pounds with fellow members of the Reform Club that he can travel around the world in 80 days. He hires Jean Passepartout as his servant and sets out the same evening, taking only a carpet bag and a large sum of money. The wager becomes a sensation in London, where newspapers take sides and betting on his chances grows heavy. Meanwhile, a detective named Fix becomes convinced that Fogg resembles a man who recently robbed the Bank of England. This is the Mercury Theatre on the Air's adaptation of Jules Verne's novel, broadcast October 23, 1938, with Orson Welles as Phileas Fogg.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
