What happens
Gerson Hapsmith and his wife Laurie live in New York. Gerson has become famous as the man in a string bow tie in a cologne advertisement, and his face is displayed on buses and subway cars across the city. Laurie, riding the subway on New Year's Eve, finds strangers admiring the poster and taking an interest in her husband, which leaves her uneasy. The couple decide to go out for a night on the town, and the evening takes an unexpected turn. This is an episode of the radio anthology On Stage, first broadcast on January 1, 1953, with Kathy and Elliot Lewis as the lead players.
New York City, on New Year's Eve in 1953, moving between the Seventh Avenue subway, an advertising agency, and a nightclub.
Characters: Gerson Hapsmith, Laurie Hapsmith, Derry, Mr. Honeywell, Janice, Billy Bailey, Carolyn, Thomas
Listen for: Laurie's wry reactions to seeing her husband's face in the subway advertisement, and the escalating exchange with the stranger at the nightclub.
Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
