What happens

Clarence, a discharged army private with thick glasses, comes to the office of wealthy businessman Mr. Wheeler seeking work and is hired on the spot. He is soon drawn into the chaotic Wheeler household, where Mrs. Wheeler is jealous of the governess Violet Penny, daughter Cora is infatuated with Hubert Stem, and son Bobby keeps getting expelled from school. Clarence sympathizes with each family member in turn. This is an episode of the Old Gold Comedy Theater, a radio comedy broadcast from Hollywood, based on Booth Tarkington's play Clarence and starring Joseph Cotton. It aired on November 26, 1944.

The Wheeler household and Mr. Wheeler's office in an unnamed city, mid-1940s

Characters: Clarence, Mr. Wheeler, Mrs. Wheeler, Violet Penny, Cora Wheeler, Bobby Wheeler, Hubert Stem, Della

Listen for: Clarence's dry, deadpan replies as the Wheeler family's arguments escalate around him

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
