What happens
Nurse Anne Lee takes the blame when a young patient dies after her sister Lucy, who was supposed to be on duty, falls asleep and a breathing tube becomes blocked. Anne leaves the hospital in disgrace, but Lucy's mistakes and Anne's own choices lead to a new position at the Hepatin Hospital in England. There she works under Dr. Prescott, a skilled surgeon who is fighting for a new hospital. This episode of Lux Radio Theatre was broadcast on May 27, 1940, starring Olivia de Havilland and Herbert Marshall, with Helen Chandler. The first act ends after a traffic accident on a wet road.
A hospital in England, the Hepatin Hospital and the Sheeram Hospital, in a wet, industrial community
Characters: Anne Lee, Lucy Lee, Dr. Prescott, Matron, Nurse Gregg, Mr. Bowley, Matt Bowley, Dr. Katie
Listen for: The nurses' argument over the blocked breathing tube and the matron's warning that there is nothing as bad as a bad nurse; the accident on the wet road; Dr. Prescott's pleas for a new hospital at the committee meeting
Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
