What happens

Charlie and Libby are street buskers in London who meet when Libby steals a cigarette case from a songwriter, Harley Prentice, and Charlie is arrested for it. Charlie, an elocutionist, takes Libby in at his rooming house, where she is given a room and a chance to work as a performer. Libby becomes a regular figure in his life and in the shabby boarding house. The story is adapted from the 1940 Paramount film The Sidewalks of London, broadcast on the Lux Radio Theatre on February 12, 1940, starring Charles Laughton and Elsa Lanchester, with Alan Marshall. This guide covers only the first part of the episode.

London, in the streets and alleys near a theatre, and a rooming house

Characters: Charlie, Libby, Harley Prentice, Gentry, Arthur, Ma, Pa

Listen for: Charlie's recitation of 'The Green Eye of the Little Yellow God' and the cooperators' street act

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
