What happens
Lux Radio Theatre presents The Phantom of the Opera, a 1943 adaptation starring Nelson Eddy, Susanna Foster and Basil Rathbone. In 1880 Paris, the Opera house is haunted by strange events. Soprano Christine Dubois begins a secret relationship with the Inspector Dubeau, while the violinist Eric Clodin, dismissed from the orchestra, struggles to have his concerto published. After a dispute at the publisher's office, Clodin is left in a state of growing desperation. The episode's opening act sets up the mood of the Opera, with its gaiety and hidden shadows, and the first troubles that begin to unsettle the company.

Listen for: The gradual unease of the Opera company as Clodin's grievances grow and the shadows in the building begin to stir.
Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
