What happens
Laura Pennington, a young woman returned to her village, takes a job as maid at a remote New England cottage run by the widow Mrs. Minut. The cottage has a reputation for enchantment, and when Oliver Bradford, a young man about to marry, rents it for a honeymoon, Laura meets him there. Oliver, back from the war, has been left disfigured and withdraws from the world, and Laura begins to care for him. Robert Young and Dorothy McGuire star in this Lux Radio Theatre adaptation of the Arthur Wing Pinero play, broadcast in 1945 as a holiday presentation of the series.
A lonely cottage on the rocky New England shore, surrounded by forest, in the village of Eastwood, around the time of the Second World War.
Characters: Laura Pennington, Oliver Bradford, Mrs. Minut, Beatrice Alexander, Danny, Mr. Hillgrove
Listen for: Oliver's first conversation with Laura in his room, and Mrs. Minut's warning to Laura about the cottage's traditions.
Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
