What happens

Eddie Nielsen, a disgruntled New York taxi driver, takes an Irish immigrant named Mary Turner around the city as she searches for her missing husband, Jim Turner, a writer. Mary arrives in New York with little money and only a few letters and a pawn ticket to guide her. Eddie grudgingly helps her track down his trail, visiting an old address, a publisher and other leads. This Lux Radio Theatre adaptation of the 20th Century Fox film Taxi is starring Dan Daley as Eddie and Colleen Gray as Mary, broadcast on October 19, 1953. The episode is a romantic comedy that follows their journey through the city as Eddie's gruff manner slowly softens.

New York City, 1950s

Characters: Eddie Nielsen, Mary Turner, Jim Turner, Mrs. Nielsen, Mr. Knudson, Miss Millard

Listen for: Eddie's grumbling about his rainy-day cab business and his mother's matchmaking, and the moment Mary explains how she came to marry Jim after only a week together in Ireland.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
