What happens
A young woman, employed as a paid companion to a domineering American widow in Monte Carlo, meets the wealthy English widower Maxim de Winter, who is still grieving for his first wife, Rebecca. Their brief romance leads to a quick marriage and a move to Manderley, his great estate on the Cornish coast. There the new Mrs. de Winter finds herself living in the long shadow of her predecessor, and in the presence of the forbidding housekeeper, Mrs. Danvers, who keeps Rebecca's rooms untouched. This Lux Radio Theatre production stars Vivian Leigh and Laurence Olivier, and the episode is adapted from the 1940 film based on Daphne du Maurier's novel, as introduced by producer William Keighley. The story follows the new wife's growing unease at Manderley.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
