What happens
Lou Gehrig, a Columbia College student, leaves his studies to join the New York Yankees after his mother falls seriously ill and the family needs money for a private hospital. His mother, who had planned for him to become an engineer like his uncle Otto, is disappointed, but Lou presses on with baseball. Sportswriter Sam Blake, a friend of Lou's, narrates the story. Lou meets Eleanor Twitchell in Chicago and the two grow close as his career advances. This episode is the first half of the Lux Radio Theatre's 1943 adaptation of the Samuel Goldwyn film The Pride of the Yankees, starring Gary Cooper and Virginia Bruce.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
