What happens

In 1885 on the marshlands of the Thames estuary, Ellen Creed works as a housekeeper for her employer, Mr. Scott, and hopes to bring her two elderly sisters, Emily and Louise, to live with her. Albert Feather, a bank clerk and nephew of Ellen's employer, arrives needing money to cover a shortfall before a cashier's inspection. Ellen agrees to the visit, and the sisters' behaviour grows increasingly strained as the household is tested. This is the Lux Radio Theatre production of Ladies in Retirement, broadcast on September 27, 1943, starring Ida Lupino, Brian Aherne, Dame May Whitty and Edith Barrett.

England, 1885; a lonely house on the marshlands of the Thames estuary

Characters: Ellen Creed, Albert Feather, Emily, Louise, Mrs. Bisk, Mr. Scott

Listen for: The growing tension between Ellen and her sisters, and Mrs. Bisk's reaction when Ellen asks her to keep the sisters at the house.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
